GIA too big?

College hoops attendance nation wide is way down. That's why Texas Baylor just built smaller arenas for their teams.

We could do what Texas did. The arena seats 9k for hoops and 20k for concerts. The entire upper deck is covered with white screens and they project stats ,scores and ads on during the game.

I could see us doing that to the upper decks at the ends of the court. It's way better than black curtains that some use.
Or tarps like the people of the tarp in Waco

Saturday’s game was a perfect example of the good and the bad.

200’s and 300’s on the sides weren’t ugly empty. For a team w only 2 conference wins and on the heels of Boynton’s interview I thought the crowd size exceeded and the enthusiasm was also good.

Problem from my perspective is that students aren’t turning out either. Bleachers on both baselines were maybe 60%, baseline 200’s were 50% at most and bleachers behind score table were full but not at capacity. I don’t want to point fingers bc I’m not going to judge them for doing other things. Those who came were into the game.

Those are your future season ticket holders and they aren’t coming now.

Kids have so many things to be entertained by these days, very few are going to come and support a team with a losing record. Its a 2024 thing, not an OSU thing.

Too big....shhheeeett.. For those of us who were students back when the expansion first opened.....we broke the damn door off the southwest entrance.....ask any OSU PD who was there. It was a mad dash to get seats on the first couple of rows. We camped out for days. Hell, I rearranged my class schedule to not have class on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I could camp out. The good ole days.....

I bought an extra ticket through OSU today at 5. Ticket office said there were only a couple of hundred left. Those will be gone tomorrow.

2 game win streak. Fresh starting to play together and better. Last conference bedlam.

It needs to be reduced once OSU gets a coach that wants to coach offense as well as defense...knock out the top three or four rows...ring it with suites 360...which will increase yearly revenue...will make it seat around 9000...which OSU can fill constistently...even when we're mediocre...we put 6000-7000 butts in the seats...I mostly go to Texas Tech...BU type games...six or seven a year...and that's about the crowd size...I went to the BYU game last week...a third of the crowd was BYU...but I was shocked at how many OSU fans were there...with a decent offensive product...8000-9000 would probably show up...this teams offense has gotten better over the last eight games...but when you don't practice offense...games like today happen...Boynton couldn't help his kids offensivly...when it counted late...we couldn't run shit...game in hand...run a decent play...and you win...oh well...Boyton or no Boyton...we need suits around the top 360...they'll be bought...and the arena will look more full

This is the correct answer. Texass specifically built a new arena to have about 10,000 seating (for basketball, (and 16,000 for concerts). There are articles out there quoting the AD, etc., that they wanted to maximize their home court advantage, but they could have it larger for other events. We could easily do the same thing in GIA. Here's an excerpt from an article about their new arena from Forbes:

"That discussion led to a new way to partition off the large building. Working with a theatrical company, Gensler designed fabric-wrapped aluminum frames that fold into the ceilings and can hinge down and seal off the entire upper bowl of the arena. Instead of using blackout curtains, as is common in the industry, the new partitions block off the view of the 5,000-seat upper deck and make the space look and feel much smaller." https://www.forbes.com/sites/timnew...sign-for-basketball-concerts/?sh=4d89672e5d3b

We could cut off the upper sections, or just some of the upper rows, in much the same way, I would think. Can't be some huge technical problem. Just takes some imagination and willingness to think outside the box.
We need to regain that home court advantage. Old Gallagher Hall held 6,381. Then GIA took it to 13,611. More than twice as large. Why not make it reducible to 10,000 or less. Heck, if enuf tickets are sold, easily resize it to 11 or 12 or 13 thousand with partitions similar to the ones UT uses. Makes sense.
Heck, Duke has wisely preserved their great home-court advantage with Cameron Indoor, which holds 9,314.
As Russell Westbrook used to say--and probably still does--why not?

If they wanted to install some cozier seating and we lost 10% or so of the capacity, it wouldn't be a horrible thing.

We aren’t people of the tarp, win some damn games and it’s not to big. Winning fixes lots of things

The arena size needs to be in sync with the season ticket sales and not necessarily with attendance. Still it would be a big ask financially to do much right now since there is a coaches buyout to contend with.
