I really started following the Steelers as kind of my second NFL team when Mason & JW went there. I thought they were lucky to go to one of the league’s historically well run franchises and they’d enjoy a lot of success because of that. I mean, beats the hell out of going to Carolina or Chicago right?
Any, I’ve continued to follow them since and they’ve got some serious soul searching to do as an organization. The philosophy of play great defense and grind out 19-17 wins isn’t sustainable and gets you nowhere in the postseason.
It’s admirable to have only had 3 head coaches in your team history, but is Tomlin still the guy to lead them to titles? The consecutive non-losing seasons streak is impressive, no doubt, they don’t build statues or hand out rings for regular seasons. This franchise is about winning rings, and it’s become a postseason punchline that nobody anywhere views as a credible threat in the playoffs. Nobody.
The team has an aging Heyward & Fitzpatrick, Watt still in his prime, a malcontent and inconsistent #1 in Pickens and a good duo at RB and what else? The ceiling on how far a diminished Russell Wilson can take them is painfully obvious. Oh, and they’re in a division with Jackson and Burrow both in their prime.
Obviously the QB situation has to be solved, but who’s the answer? Carr? Darnold? I don’t know.
Is there actually scrutiny on Tomlin? They haven’t won a playoff game since 2016 now. Does almost a decade of making the playoffs and losing in the first round define what their new standard is? I’ve got to think their fanbase, one of the sport’s absolute best, is waking up with a hangover this morning with some serious questions about the future.
