I wanted to start an AI thread where we could discuss all things related to AI. Despite someone who uses it on a daily basis, I am a bear on AI and think it is not what it is cracked up to be. What are your thoughts on it?

AI slop work is a thing. I've seen bad actors at my middle management level faking their way through and I've been given some of the dumbest reports from field techs trying to AI their way through their job to look smart, but they're not smart enough to know the report is a polished turd.

Also, Paycom has had some massive layoffs. We had a guys golf outing for a day and night on Saturday at Grand Lake. One of my friends nearly missed the trip because his wife just got replaced by AI the previous day. She let him go still, but it's a weird feeling discussing AI replacing so many of us at certain employers. Not sure it can take my job yet, but I have seen some AI safety observation software.

I should add that I do find AI helpful for quick answers and a quick base for creating slide decks. You can't rely on what it spits out and you must tweak the rest of the slides, in my case. It's good at a quick start from point A to point B and then I can finish at point C... if that makes sense.

I was never any good at physics and recently used AI to calculate the amount energy it would take to fracture bone in a fingertip from a 30lb brick moving over manually roller conveyors. That was pretty cool.

AI already makes work incredibly more efficient and is going to continue get more refined. I will provide one personal example. Since I retired, I have been helping construct new curriculum and teach Financial Literacy at my local high school. I use normal AI assistance, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc, but I have been amazed with an education-specific AI called “Brisk”.

With Brisk, I provide a detailed prompt of the lesson plan (usually after assistance with Gemini), link a Youtube video or website for Brisk to review….and have it build me a Google Slide deck in less than 30 seconds. Could I personally build a similar deck? Yes. But it does it in 30-seconds compared to 30 minutes. Amazing efficiency.

* Also, I can have it differentiate the Google Slide deck content based on grade level. Same content, but presented in a college-level for high-performers and a 7th grade level so those not as strong.
* And I told it to build me a 25-question Kahoot game for the students based on the Slides and it did it in seconds.

For teachers/educators, AI will truly lessen the time needed to prepare effective lesson plans, building visuals, and enhancing the interactive opportunities for students.

I've been using AI to write process manuals for Software support by recoding myself doing the process via video, uploading the Video to Co-Pilot and then having Co-Pilot do a step by step process guide with screen shots , and arrows for each click.

I Record the screen while I talk out loud and describe each step of the process and why I am doing it. Then take the video and upload it and ask for a step by step process guide and it will churn it out in about 5 Min.

I have been now tasked to rewrite ALL of the process guides for the software our internal support teams use in this format after a survey of the old process manual vrs new way created by AI. The team responded with a 90% rating that the AI process manuals were much easier to follow and understand and each click was highlighted for them with visual aids.

More on my plate to do, but VERY simple vrs writing it out manually and doing screen shots and adding icons and arrows for clicks Screen shot by Screen shot. Taken a Hours or Days long process and turned it into a process of how long it takes me to record a video of me doing it and uploading that video to AI

A lot of good and a lot of unknowns at the moment. A lot of what I do is information we can shove in to AI machines. So a little hand tied on that

I thought this was funny. I have to admit at first I had a little bit of that "Hey, cool, he was impressed by that question" until I slapped myself and realized that was mega dumb.
